Building fundamentals of Compassionate Communication with Daniel Kaszuba

About NVC...

Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is an approach focused on building healthy and satisfying relations. It works for both personal and professional part of life. The violence in this sense is not only about physical abuse of people but it includes such actions as moral judgement, criticism etc. Pretty much anything that aims to make others feel fear, shame or guilt. Sounds like something that may happen pretty much any place, any time, doesn’t it?

The basis of NVC is not to say that people who use violence are bad. Otherwise, it would be judging the judgement which leads us nowhere. The idea behind NVC is to build another level of understanding about what’s going on within our relations and what can be done to make them fulfilling for everyone.

Who is the workshop for? Well anyone is welcome!

Communication awareness is something that everyone can benefit from. So at William Hill, we want everyone to get involved and start creating collaborative space and get satisfied with the daily work.
For now, we organised 2 workshops with a total of 20 people trained. These included Head of Tech, Software Engineering Team Leads, HR and other roles. And we are aiming to invite others to participate in the future workshops in the upcoming months.

Well, I know… At this stage, some of you may think: “It’s yet another communication training”. You know what? It may sound like that, but the idea behind it is much wider. We would like people at WH to be able to create conditions so that their work is efficient, satisfying, fulfilling. You might be able to have more efficient 1on1s, more fruitful meetings, less disruptive conflicts (but not necessarily fewer conflicts :) ). The skills that you gain by experiencing NVC training help you form such reality around you.

Feedback from the very first edition of NVC training was very positive! See Kamil Stanuch's - Krakow Site Director, thoughts on that:

"Although each conflict understood as a clash of ideas might yield a new, unique value or quality there should be no place for violence in this process. Especially when it comes to communication and that’s where NVC (or Nonviolent Communication) comes with help - an approach based on the assumption that each of us has capacity for compassion and empathy and that these two are way more productive. Daniel’s training was pretty eyes opening and even as a short introduction to this vast topic made us realised how often - and unintentionally! - we tend to use microaggression towards each other. Definitely a must-have for everyone willing to improve their communications skills not only as a manager in business settings but also in our daily life or relationship."

About the Trainer...

The internal training is run by Daniel Kaszuba - Delivery Lead at International. His road with NVC is linked to the post-diploma studies that he did at Collegium Civitas in Warsaw. He also attended some additional training in this field + he spent hours making his own research, reading books, listening to YouTube videos etc.

If anyone would like to start his NVC path, you may want to do it by listening to the below video:

Or you may simply ready a book written by the NVC founder Marshall Rosenberg - Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life: Life-Changing Tools for Healthy Relationships.
